We had a power outage today, which was very disorienting. It also trapped me in the house, as I was working from home, and could neither work, nor go to work (power garage door opener). So I read a book.
The power came back on in about two hours, and of course, the Linux machine came right up and didn’t work right. It took me a while to realize that it was missing the default route for some reason, and made note of the exact command I used to fix it, so I don’t have to think about it next time.
I just lost a two-year uptime, as well as a one-year idle IRC session. Stupid PG&E.
Okay, so that out of the way, what have I missed? WDW photos to come. Go Sox. That’s about it.
I’m pretty sure there’s a release handle that let’s you disconnect the door from the opener so that you can open it manually.
Yeah I was wondering about that myself, but at least you got to stay home. 😉
Time to get a big UPS for your linux machine.
I have a UPS… it lasted long enough for me to sit around, dazed… wait for the power to come back on, go searching for a keyboard to plug into the machine to shut it down… and just barely miss doing it.
I won’t tell you how long I waited, because it’s kind of embarassing. I didn’t want to lose my uptime, and the power always came back on in time before!
I used to run a UPS at netscape that could automatically send a shut down script to the system. It was awesome
Dude, I think I was on IRC last night when you winked out of existence. You’ve beat me by a huge margin. I think the longest I’ve had this XP box powered and non-rebooted was about 3 days straight.
See you Saturday, hopefully, at the FFXI anniversary.
Ah, speaking of the last comment by thndr – I’m glad I bought my UPS after the last power flickering. Up and running for 2 weeks now, and I feel a bit better about leaving this machine on when I’m out. (And of course, the power flickered when I was home, but in the shower. Luck of the damned, I tell you.)
Why I wont run linux
Every time the power used to fail I’d get a kernel panic. Since I was using mandrake, you can guess the level of linux skill I have.
Go Sox? How much further can they go, for Pete’s sake?
